Coffee and Scream

We pulled up in front of my favorite little hole in the wall coffee shop, and I was so wrapped up in the guys’ teasing I almost ran right into the people ordering at the counter. Grayson managed to grab my waist to steady me just as I bumped into the purse slung over the woman’s shoulder.

“So sorry,” I squealed as the woman turned around to give me a smile. My breath caught in my throat and instantly, tears threatened to pour from my eyes.

“No worries,” she said breezily, then her brows rose in recognition as she took in the guys around me.

“Hunter?” She gave the nephilim a huge smile that hid a sadness only someone who knew her well would see, and he shot me a worried look before stepping in front of me to embrace her.

“Hey, Effie,” he returned. As he wrapped my best friend in a brotherly hug, I felt myself start to panic. All the loss of the last week or so began to feel like a vise that was currently constricting my lungs. Cash, empath that he was, quickly grabbed my hand in his and cupped my cheek with the other.

“Hang in there, love.” He moved to stand in front of me, putting more space between me and my best friend who wasn’t allowed to know that I lived, and placed a hand on Hunter’s shoulder.

“Good to see you, Effie. I just realized we forgot something in the car. We’ll be right back.” He tugged my hand and I felt his magic wrapping around me like a soft blanket. Peace and comfort flooded me and stopped the tears from flowing as my best friend glanced my way, no recognition crossing her face as she smiled at us.

“Good to see you too, Cash.”

His fingers intertwined with mine as he pulled me towards their car. I turned to look back at my beautiful friend and felt my heart crack painfully. Once we were standing beside the massive black SUV and out of sight of the cafe, strong arms wrapped around me, cocooning me in a tight hug. Cash’s magic pulled back just a bit and a keening sound made its way out of my lips.

“Breathe, love, just breathe. You’re going to be ok. You’re alright. I’m here.” His large hand moved to the back of my head and smoothed my hair soothingly. His cedar scent enveloped me and I bit back a sob.

“Fuck. This hurts so much, Cash.”

“I know, Lor. I can feel it.” I looked up at him, everything blurred by my tears, and concern was etched across his features.

“I wasn’t prepared to see her. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do or how to act. And she’s going to want to know my name. What do I tell her? I can’t introduce myself as Lorelai. I hadn’t exactly come up with a cover story or fake identity yet.” Cash’s eyebrows furrowed.

“No, I suppose you can’t. What about a name that’s close enough that it won’t be easy to forget and you’ll still be likely to respond to it.
